FAQ
- What is watch modding?
Watch modding is the process of creating a customise timepiece using various aftermarket parts. You can modify an existing watch or start from scratch. - Can you mod any watch?
Sure, any watch can be modded. Replacing a bracelet to a Nato or rubber strap can be called modding but when you hear the it usually mean a more extensive makeover. This could include changing the dial, hands, case, hour markers, crystal etc - Why do people mod watches?
Well there are many reasons to mod watches. Some people like to tinker with the mechanicals of watchmaking, some like to create something unique to their personality. Also some people like to mod a homage to their favorite luxury watch but at a tiny fraction of the cost. - Which watches can you mod?
Any watch can be modded but the most popular brands are Seiko and Casio G-shock. For Seiko it means the SKX 007 or SKX 009 and newer Seiko 5. There's a whole ecosystem of aftermarket parts available to let you customise the watch to your heart's content. - Which brand is best for beginners?
In my opinion, the casio GA-2100 (casioak, because it resembles the Audemar Piguet Royal Oak) is the easier of the 2 to mod. You don't need any specialist tools apart from a screwdriver that usually comes with a mod kit. The movement is self contained so it fits straight in to a case and strap kit. Of course you can go much deeper and start changing the dials, hand and hour markers but to do a quick cosmetic change of strap and case then it'll only take you 15 mins. - What about the Seiko modding?
Seiko modding has more options especially if you intend to build a watch from scratch as you can buy the workhorse NH35 movement and start from there. If you're a fan of Rolex then this is the place to start as you can build a submariner, GMT or Yachtmaster at a small fraction of their price. The advantage of this is you won't need to buy a donor watch like you usually have to with a casioak.
Of course you can also start with a base watch like an SKX/SPRD and mod from there which could make things simpler but you will still need need some specialist tools to do the job right i.e bezel remover, case back remover, crystal press and other bits and pieces.
